'03 password prompt problem - SOLVED!

Plug Guy

After trying nearly every fix offered on this site, along with quite a few
others and using MS knowledge base (waste of time), I finally solved this
problem.

Editing the registry did NOT solve it, as directed in the kb. Deleting the
email account and starting with a new one did not solve.

The problem was the password was never saving even though the box was
checked to do so.

Here was my fix: create a new windows user account, log on to that account,
start up fresh Outlook (never launched for that user), and created the same
settings. It worked perfectly.

THEN I had to migrate files/folders/programs/etc, which is not too bad. But
HERE is the kicker:

You DO NOT want to simply import your old .pst file. YOU MUST CAN IT FOR
ERRORS UNTIL IT SCANS CLEAN FIRST.

Search -> Files/Folders -> scanpst.exe

Run it

Every time it finds an error, repair it and start the scan over. Once it
runs all the way through, THEN you have a good file.

I copied my main .pst file to the desktop and ran the scan from there.

THEN, and ONLY then, did I import the .pst file to the new user Outlook.

Of course I had to re-setup the desktop and shortcuts and so on, but that
was minimal time compared to the huge number of hours I lost trying to fix
the problem to begin with.

Hope this helps someone. What a real pain, since the usual fixes were of no
use.

This one came directly from a free call to MS, so hat's off to MS for this
one fix, just wish it was in the kb somewhere!

Didn't work for me. I've had the problem even before I even touched one of
my old pst files. Tried it again with a new profile as described, but again
Outlook started to forget passwords before I had bothered to open one of my
existing pst files.

But I am not sure if I understand you correctly: What do you mean by
importing pst files? Do you not just open them? Did everything work for you
until you started to access/open/import your old data?

Thanks

If you DO NOT Follow the instructions I was given, you will simply
repopulate your new profile with your bad/sick/infected pst files.

YOU MUST CLEAN THE PST file first! That was the key for me.

Once it was clean, and sent to the desktop, I then logged into my 'new'
profile, with all the settings working, and IMPORTed the PST file.

If you simply try to copy/paste, you will end up like I did for two weeks,
fighting this crazy thing.

Do what I listed above, and try again.

Only don't import the file. Never import a PST file. Just open it.
