04 Drag/Drop: text remains in original doc

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I'm dragging text from one doc to another in 04, and for some reason the text I'm moving remains in the original doc, whereas it should be cut. How can I make it do what it should do?

Hi whitman;

The default action of drag 'n' drop within the same document is to move the
content from the source to the target. When you cross the plane from one
window to another, however, the default observed by the OS is to Copy - note
the green circle containing the plus sign. The original content stays put &
is replicated in the target file.

If you actually want to move the content from one file to another use the
traditional Cut/Paste method or hold both Option+Command while you drag the
content. When you drop in the other file you'll get a small menu containing
a Move Here command.

Thanks Bob. That's very helpful.

I'm sure I used to do this in 10.4 without having to Option+Command it. Is it a change with 10.5?

I'm honestly not sure... I only have my MBP with me & it's running Leopard.
I can't remember the behavior in Tiger but I'll try to check when I get back
home to my G5.

In OS 10.4 with Word 2004 the behaviour is as Bob describes -- i.e., the
text is copied and the only way to change the behaviour is to hold both
Option and Command while you drag the content, then select from the small
menu containing the Move Here command.

I don't recall its being different in previous versions of Word and the OS,
but I don't use it much so could be wrong.

In essence the Command + Option procedure is a work-around originated by
Microsoft to overcome the default behaviour of the Mac OS.

If Mac Finder if you wan to move a file from one folder to another or
one drive or another, you use Command (apple /Cloverleaf) key-Drag
since this is system wide command would that work in word as well??
Note I am asking not suggesting.

Nope - as Clive confirmed it's a quirk of OS X. Both Option & Command are
required in order to move content from one file window to another.

You reckon that's because OSX uses command drag by itself to move and MS
uses command Drag for something else?

I honestly don't know, but you're comparing apples & oranges...

An OS file management operation v. an application document editing
operation. Apple's apps (Text Edit & Pages anyway) don't even support moving
content from one doc window to another - copy only.
