1.5 days booking resource as 2 days?!

G

Ger

I'm hoping someone can help me here. I keep coming up with
a problem (in MS Project 98, but may well apply to other
versions) where I need to book a resource for 1.5 days,
and I do so with 100% of their time. It then books the
resource against the task for a full 2 days.

I presume this is because I have entered 100%, but even if
I enter less it still spans 2 days - just lowers the
percentage of use.

What I want is to be able to have 100% for first day, and
50% for second day, therefore allowing me to book out the
resource for half of the second day without it being
flagged as overbooked.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Gerrard,
You just have to create your task with Duration = 1.5 d, then assign the
resource with Units = 100%

You shouldn't expect to see the resource 100% on one day and 50% on the
second. The task is a 12 hour task, 1.5 days in duration, and the resouce
is booked 100% from start to finish. Use the Tools Options menu, View tab,
and select a date format that shows the date and time. Enter task X with
1.5 days duration. Assuming you are using the standard default calendar, it
will show beginning one day at 8am and ending the next day at 12 noon.
Assign your resource 100%. You'll see the dates stay the same. Switch to
the resource usage or task usage view. You'll see the resource is doing 8
hours on the first day and 4 hours on the second.

Steve,

Although the resource graph for my resource pool is still
showing 2 days as fully booked, it now allows me to
allocate for the remaining time on the second day.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

The resource graph shows peak usage for the day, that is, that maximum he is
booked at any point during the day. If the resource is working 100%,
whether its for half the day or all day or even just one minute sometime
during the day, the resource graph will show 100%. It does NOT indicate
what percent of the day he is working. If you right mouse click on one of
the graph's bars you can switch to see other units and if you'll switch from
peak units to percent allocation (in proj 2003 at least, don't recall with
earlier versions but I think they're the same) you'll see 100% on day 1 and
50% on day 2.
