1. Can I stop the formatting pallette from automatically opening to different menus every time I select an object like a text box of graphic? It slows down everything I do.

2. Every time I add an object to a file it automatically moves everything else on the page until I go in and change the wrapping. Can't I set a default wrapping to "in front"?

Not sure I follow the problem - the Palette is certainly context sensitive
but since it displays the applicable tools for the selected content & hides
those which don't apply it seems that just the opposite should be true. The
only customizations are available if you click the bent arrow at the upper
right corner of the Toolbox Palette.

You can also collapse it using the right-most of the 3 "stoplight" buttons
at the left end of the palette's title bar. Likewise by dbl-clicking the
title bar itself.

In Word> Preferences> Edit - Editing Options you can set the "Insert/paste
pictures as:" to whatever wrapping you prefer to be the default.
