100% black fill problem

Customer-created 2 color Word file needs to be printed on a press. The
workaround for spot color seps for text is to make proper color
substitutions in a copy of the Word file. Black will image 100% clear
on K film sep, Light Orange will image 100% clear on Y film sep, Indigo
will image 100% clear on C film sep, and so on. I convert file to a pdf
and import that into InDesign for output with registration marks.

For autoshape and textbox fills, the same process does not work
correctly. Black fill images about 90+% on K film sep. A Light Orange
Line images 100% on Y film sep, but adds about an 80% tint in the fill
area.

How can I get around this? I want 100% K fills with no added color.
Thanks.

Here's how, I just found out the hard way.

For type: Make a grid of "n" in Zapf Dinbats (makes a box character) 8
across, 5 down. Apply colors to each N in same pattern as in the
swatches grid.

For border: Make a grid of autoshape or texboxes 8 across, 5 down.
Apply colors to each border in same pattern as in the swatches grid.

For fill: Make a grid of autoshape or texboxes 8 across, 5 down. Apply
colors to each fill in same pattern as in the swatches grid.

Make pdf of each file. Bring pdfs into InDesign. Image the C and M film
seps to see which Word color images 100% clear and which images 100%
solid. Apply appropriate colors to copy of Word doc, one copy is 100%
of one color and 0% other, and so on for other colors. Make individual
pdfs. Bring pdfs into InDesign and image with registration marks.
Voila, spot color seps from Word files.

....or, just use InDesign to start off with.
