11.3.0 ruined my Office!

I just finished downloading and installing the update for MS Office
2004, 11.3.0 and now none of my Office programs work. I try to open
them and it looks like they're trying to open, the the Microsoft error
reporting tool opens...I send in the errors, but don't feel they are
going to do any good.

I did get Word to open for a second and realized that all the icons in
the toolbars were missing, I tried clicking on the formatting toolbar
and that caused the program to crash...hello error reporting tool.

This is really frustrating! I don't want to re-install software! Why
can't MS make something WORK!

Have you run Repair Disk Permissions since instaling the update? If not you
may want to try doing so before anything else.

If that doesn't resolve it download & install the update again... but get it
from the link provided on the Mactopia page rather than using AutoUpdate:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/

Make sure to use Repair Disk Permissions after any software
updates/upgrades. If you still have problems post back with updated results
including type of Mac & OS version.

I haven't done the 11.3 update yet so I can't say with certainty, but the
lack of posts to the contrary suggests that this isn't a problem experienced
by others. There must be something particular to your configuration.

If you are on an Intel based Mac, you may need to either kill the
"translated" task, or reboot. This task is responsible for implementing
Rosetta and may be caching stuff from the pre-patched version.

That's my guess. If it applies to you, give it a try.

Thanks,

A minute or two after I posted I DL'd the update from
www.microsoft.com/mac/ and re-installed, now everything works great. I
just think its weird that an official Microsoft update, DL'd via
Automatic Update (which is now disabled) would cause such a problem.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

Glad you're back on track, but don't forget what I suggested about the
Repair Disk Permissions utility.

As far as the AutoUpdate, I wouldn't be too harsh on that. There are a
number of variables that can factor into the effectiveness of the updates
supplied that way - including a hiccup in the internet connection during
d/l - which may or may not be attributable to MS. I have routinely used AU
in v11 (except for the 11.2.5) without a problem.

No problems here.
