11.3.5 Installer won't update

C

Chris Brummel

I've been having some problems with Entourage (http://
groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage/
browse_thread/thread/2454bc58cf6a7f4a/#) that I haven't been able to
solve, so I decided to back things up and reinstall from my original
disk.

I reinstalled fine, but now I can't get up to date. I downloaded the
11.3.5 Office update, but it always gets stuck on "Searching for
programs to update...". I've installed this before and it's never
taken nearly this long.

I've used the Uninstall program and also attempted to handle it
manually (Deleting the folder in Applications, "Microsoft User Data"
in Documents, and all the associated preferences). Any ideas for
getting around this?

Thanks,
Chris

This is one of those problems we don¹t have a lock on the cause.

1. Download the combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using
Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

2. Be sure to Repair Permissions after you update.

I'm new to this group, but cannot figure out how to post a new subject.
There doesn't seem to be a "New Topic" button anywhere. In Help, I found
lots of little nanny-rules about how to behave, etc., but nothing on this.

I think I've figured it out. And, I belong in the Word group -- where the
problems are. Thanks anyway.

I'm having the same problem as Chris. I reinstalled Office to try
(unsuccessfully) to fix a problem with Excel crashing. Now I can't install
the updates to Office. I get the error message "The installer could not
locate the correct version of the software required to install this update.
See the Read Me file included with this installer to see if your software
meets the requirements for this update".

I have checked the Read Me file and nothing in it explains my problem.

I have followed the instructions above for the combo updater from Apple
which has updated me from OS 10.4.9 to 10.4.10, but that has had no effect
on the inability to install the updates to Office. That problem continues
in exactly the same way.

Any thoughts??

We offer suggestions and the only way we know they work is when we get
feedback. Sadly, for the situation you describe most people don't get back
on whether our suggestions worked. So, this is my thoughts on what to do...

I think that the reason you can't install is your base OS files were
corrupted so your efforts have resulted in low level problems with your
system. Do an "Archive & Install", then run combo. This should give you a
good base. Install Office then Update.

Please let us know if that worked.

Tip: the backup software SuperDuper! has a feature where you can make a
"sandbox". This is a bootable system with your User's folder aliased back to
your original drive. You work off the sandbox and update it. If things go
bad, you boot into your original volume and you're in a pre-update state.

SuperDuper! Is $27.95. I¹m not affiliated with the product. Just a satisfied
user.
