From what I can tell, it's mostly a security update.
I believe it comes in the form of a combo update though.

I haven't looked, so this is just a guess, but I sincerely doubt it. The
..docx capability you're talking about will most likely be offered as
optional filters rather than as part of a global update - many users have no
need of or interest in .docx compatibility. I'm pretty sure that if the
filters were included that there would have been somewhat of a fanfare
about their arrival. Also, if the format is brought to the Mac as a native
capability it stands to reason that it would be in the form of a new
release, not as an update to 2004 :)

No. MS has announced that the converters will be offered as stand-alones.

Past scuttlebutt on this forum said that such filters would become
available, for Office2004, so that people using 2004 would eventually be
able to download, make sense of and use Office2007 (PC) documents when
needed.

And I didn't/don't expect an fanfare about the change, since its nothing
more than adding some translators, and its not MS style to make a big
fanfare over an update for the Mac Platform.

Hi Phillip:

It's not "scuttlebutt". It's a Microsoft announcement. The converters will
be available for Office 2004.

Believe me, when they are, I would expect there will be fanfares of trumpets
and choirs of singing angels... They will make a big noise about this,
because they have been under a bit of pressure to get these things
available.

However, I still think it will be at least a few weeks before they appear.
I keep saying that these filters are "not" small pieces of code :)

Cheers

I didn't expect them to be small pieces of code. The update I did took
about 15 minutes on my 512K DSL connection and at least 5 minutes to
install I believe the count of files to change was over 600.

So it wasn't light weight.

Hi Phillip:

Yes, that's right. The 11.3.5 Service Release for Microsoft Office 2004 is
around 59.5 MB, so it's definitely on the pudgy side of lard-ass :)

I expect the XML read/write filters for Office 2008 formats to be
stand-alone "applications" of around the same size! The PC flavour is 27.1
MB, but I would expect the Mac flavour to be at least twice that (because it
will be a Universal Binary).

This is "not an easy problem to solve" so the only way to perform the
conversion quickly and reliably is to write lotsa code :)

Not being curmudgeon about it. Just asking because 11.3.5 was sooooo
large and took soooo long to install. Just thought it was so large if it
was the translators. :)

Hi Phillip:

Yeah. There are two ways of "patching" software. One is to offer a
complete replacement file for every module that has changed. That's the way
Microsoft does it.

The other way is to send a set of instructions for making binary changes to
the existing files. That's the way Corel does it.

The second way results in a dramatically smaller downloat, but a very
substantial risk of really bad things happening, because it relies on the
existing file being in an exactly known state (or the user having their
original installation files handy, which causes great pain for users of
unlicensed software :))

Cheers
