See if Spotlight can find the "Setup Assistant". Next try to apply the
latest Apple combo updater. If that installs, try applying the updater
again. You might have to use "Remove Office" and install Office 2008 again.
Be sure to restart after installing from the CD. See this page for help:

Tiger:

Hi There,

We are running Leopard but had the same problem. We thought we had
the problem solved a couple times but it turns out we did not. We
even tried uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch which did not
work (at first). Now I think we figured out a solution which is a bit
annoying but seemed to do the trick.

First you need to uninstall Office 2008 completely. The problem is
the "Remove Office" tool does not fully remove the install. We
realised this because on subsequent reinstalls, it would not ask us
for our license key - it still had it!

So here is what we did. First we ran the Remove Office Tool - this
removes all the core components but leaves all of your files etc in
tact and in place. Then we manually trashed the Update Assistant. Now
for the fun part.

There are several preference and Library files stored on your Mac that
also need to be removed.

First in <your hard disk name>/Library/Application Support there is a
folder called "Microsoft". We removed this entire folder (ie dragged
it to the trash - but if you wish to be a bit more cautious make a
temporary folder somewhere on your computer and move it here).
Next in <your hard disk name>/Users/<your user name>/Library/
Application Support there is again a folder called "Microsoft" which
we removed.
Next in <your hard disk name>/Users/<your user name>/Library/
Preferences there are a whole bunch of files to remove:

com.microsoft.autoupdate.plist
com.microsoft.autoupdate2.plist
com.microsoft.desktop.notify.plist
com.microsoft.entourage.database_daemon.plist
com.microsoft.entourage.office_reminders.plist
com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
com.microsoft.entourage.syncservices.plist
com.microsoft.error_reporting.plist
com.microsoft.Excel.plist
com.microsoft.helpviewer.plist
com.microsoft.myday.plist
com.microsoft.office_pg.plist
com.microsoft.office.plist
com.microsoft.Powerpoint.plist
com.microsoft.removeoffice.plist
com.microsoft.Word.plist

Then just to make sure we even dragged the MS office icons off the
Dock.

Then we restarted the computer.

Then we reinstalled Office 2008 and it indeed asked for our license
key. As soon as this was done, we downloaded the new AutoUpdater and
installed it. Finally we manually downloaded and installed the 12.0.1
update and it worked just fine.

Excel, no longer crashes (which it was doing frequently).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for taking the time to share your solution.

To add to your list:

There are also some packages that are not removed either. Go to
Library/Receipts folder and remove any Microsoft packages remaining. They
start with Office2008_en_

I was also having the problem where the Office 2008 12.0.1 update installer was failing with an alert and telling me that there was nothing to update.

I tried all the suggestions already put forward here (removing, reinstalling, etc.) and none of them worked.

I don't like guessing, there's got to be a reason that the update installer thinks there's nothing to update

So since I know DTrace and Leopard now has DTrace, I wrote a short DTrace script to examine all files that Installer was opening as it happened:

#!/usr/sbin/dtrace -qs

syscall::eek:pen*:entry
/execname == "Installer"/
{
printf("filename=%s\n",copyinstr(arg0));
}

and ran it. Turns out that when the Installer gets to the point that it's going to start installing the update, it actually tries to update the virtual disk that the update is mounted from and running out of, instead of the hard drive, despite the fact that I told it to update the hard drive during the installer dialog. Same thing happens when the Microsoft Office 2008 DVD is mounted when the update installer is running.

So, I copied the 12.0.1 update installer from the virtual disk to my desktop and ejected the virtual disk and the Office 2008 DVD.

Reran the 12.0.1 update installer from my desktop and it working perfectly.

Problem solved.

Thank you everyone for your replies to my original question - I really appreciate the time you have given.

I tried everything you suggested (to the letter) and nothing worked - until I installed Leopard - then I tried pkespen's solution again and it worked perfectly. Thank you very much.
