12.1.3 won't load

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

For Bob Jones:

This is the same problem that has occurred with each new update. The new update does not recognize the presence of the previous version. The solution that worked with 12.1.2, that is, removing the "if not found_valid_version: sys.exit(48)" from the package_updatable script does not work because Microsoft has made it a read only file that cannot be modified.

Why does not Microsoft fix this? Surely they must know about it by now.

Bob, or anyone know what I can do?

Thank you.

Same problem here. The updater says it can't find the software to update, even though I verified I have the 12.1.2 update installed and I haven't moved anything. Same problem with both the standalone updater and using Microsoft AutoUpdate. I'm on MacOS 10.4.11 Intel. HELP!!!

Are you people with the update problems using *Intel* Macs??

I've updated 12.1.2 on two different PPC Machines and haven't had a problem.

Unfortunately the issue can be caused by a number of possible circumstances.
The latest info I've seen is quoted below:

====================================================
RE: When you try to install 12.1.3 you can a message 12.1.3 updater
cannot see an updatable version.

This issue is usually due to a number of reasons. One can be due to
having an external hard drive plugged in, having Parallels software
running or by removing some of the contents of Microsoft Office 2008
such as the languages.

If any of the above may be an issue, then please disconnect the
external hard drive and quit Parallels and then try to install the
update 12.1.3 again.

If none of these are an issue then please try the following steps.

1. Navigate to: Hard drive/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/
MAU2.0
2. Drag the Microsoft Auto Update to the trash
3. Navigate to: Hard drive/Applications
4. Drag to the trash (if listed) Microsoft Auto Update
5. Empty the trash and restart the computer
6. Go to www.microsoft.com/mac to download and install 12.1.3

Steps to repair disk permissions:
1. Navigate to: Hard drive/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
2. Highlight Macintosh HD
3. Click Repair disk permissions
4. Once the disk permissions are finished run it again
5. Restart the computer and test the update again

If this does not work then unfortunately you will need to uninstall
and reinstall the software and reapply the updates.
====================================================

I would amend the reference to Parallels to include any VM app - the problem
is thought to be associated with the amount of memory consumed. Along those
lines if you have less than 2 Gigs of RAM it may help to Quit all other
programs while attempting the update.

I wish I could offer more but - knock wood - with all updates including
12.1.3 on both a PPC/Tiger & Intel/Leopard system I've yet to experience the
phenomenon. I'm afraid I can't even offer an explanation of why I've never
seen it first hand. There must be a "common denominator" of some kind that
has yet to be identified, but it's definitely not a universal or inherent
flaw. I understand that doesn't make it less real for those stricken, but if
the cause can't be pinpointed it's almost impossible to prevent.

Hi Bob,

I tried your solutions and they did not work for me. However, I noticed that I have two libraries. One in my home file and one under Macintosh HD. They are not identical. One has 2.05 GB of items, the other has 5.06 GB. Both have Microsoft files in the Application Support folder, but the files are different. The MAU 2.0 app was located in the HD library but not the other.

Could this be the problem, or can you have multiple libraries. BTW, I only have one MS Office version.

Thanks for your suggestions.

The existence of multiple Library folders is to be expected - one is the
"System" Library & there should be a separate one for each user account. The
user Libraries contain data specific to that user - such as Templates they
create, special Fonts not available to other users, that user's application
& System Preferences files, etc. The System Library stores data needed
globally by the apps & OS pertinent to all users. So it is typically the
largest Library folder.

When you refer to MAU 2.0 do you actually mean "app" or *folder*? The actual
app in the folder [Microsoft AutoUpdate] should be version 2.2.0, and it
should be in the HD\Library\Application Support\Microsoft\MAU 2.0 folder.

Have you followed the steps as prescribed here:

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/update.html#update_fails

And Options #1 & #2 here:

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/install_update.html#version_not_found

Bob,

Thanks for the info on Libraries. I went ahead and removed Office 2008, resinstalled it, then did the updates whic loaded just fine, Thanks for the links. I will save them.

I did mean the MAU app. It is now where you said it would be.

Thanks again,

Not the problem then.

I just updated 12.1.2 to 12.1.3 on two different Power PC Machines.
with no problem. and I have a external Hard drive installed though it
was not turned on and mounted at the time on one of the machines.

I am using a PPC mac.
