12.1.4 won't update

Entourage, while running, popped up with a new update 12.1.4 and asked
if I wanted to install. I ran the installer, more than once and it
kept coming back with can't find a version of the Office software for
this update. The only thing I can think of is possibly Office might be
corrupt but everything is running fine. 12.1.3 installed fine but this
was on my previous Macbook Pro. When I got this Macbook Pro a week ago
Wednesday they did a data migration. Some of my software had to be
reinstalled, which is to be expected but Office ran fine and the error
reporter for data migration didn't report any problems with Office.

Thoughts?

Have you modified your system in any way like remove extra languages? Office
2008 has been hit with a lot of problems installing, See this page for help
with install errors.

Diane this is a possibility. I have a utility called Macaroni that
just runs maintenance programs. I tweaked one of its settings a week
or so ago and removed languages I would never use - that is anything
but English. However, as far as I know the program only operates on
OSX and runs maintenance on that - like repair permissions and the
Unix utilities that run overnight. Do you think it might be this.

I had the same situation on an established Mac. I first used the auto update. When it failed I ran the update from a standalone download. I got the following message both times:

You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.4 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume.

I read somewhere that it was because I had not installed the languages option on the original install. So, I used Office's Remove Office program and started over. I installed the original Retail version in full, then proceeded to do all updates. I used the standalone updates on all attempts. The first update failed. I Removed Office again, restarted the Mac, Repaired Preferences. and installed the original again.

This time, before installing the first update, I opened Word - just to let Microsoft populate the necessary files. Closed Word and ran the first update. Installed without a glitch.

After this, I installed each update, opening Word, closing, then running Repair Preferences. All worked fine until the 12.1.4 update. I get the same message I got the first time, using 2 different downloads of the update.

This update is failing on a freshly installed, freshly updated, full copy of Office. There is nothing on my computer that enhances, interacts or would interfere with Office.

This Mac is a PowerMac G4, 2GB RAM, 146GB Free HD space, Mac OS X 10.5.5.

I just attempted the auto-update on an Intel MacBook Pro and it installed with no hesitation. The MBP Office does not have the extra languages installed. So, is Office following Java's lead and no longer supporting non-Intel Macs?

Yes, that would do it. You can check here:

Verify Office Files Were Modified
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/verify.html>

Fix when you have modified files:

Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key down to
disable any startup items.)
Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
Empty Trash.
Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk.
Restart
Update 12.1.0 (SP1) or if you have a newer DVD it install 12.1.0 so you
would only need to update to 12.1.3 then 12.1.4.
Restart (restarting before you launch any app is important!)
Repair Permissions for good measure.

This workaround was posted on MacFixit and it worked perfectly. It is
very easy to do - just follow the steps carefully:

Workaround for Re: office 12.1.3 won't install (or 12.1.4)

11/04/08: This is where when you run the installer all volumes are
not accepted for update. The following fixes the problem:

----------------

Thanks to all those in this forum and the mactopia forums for posting
the older 12.1.2 fix! With some minor tweaks, this fix worked for me
on both the 12.1.3. and 12.1.4 updates.

I just want to add some steps for newbies or those who tried this and
couldn't quite get it to work initially(like me). It is important the
"package_updatable" file give you permissions to overwrite and save.
---
1. Download the Office 2008 update .dmg file.
1a. Mount the .dmg file on your desktop by double-clicking it.
1b. When the Office 2008 update window opens, drag the icon for the
update to your desktop, it will take a sec to copy over. Close this
window when it is done copying and you see Update file on your
desktop.
1c. Unmount the .dmg file by either right-click on .dmg file, choose
"Eject ...", or eject/unmount in Finder.
2. Right-click on the Updater file on your desktop and choose "Show
Package Contents".
3. Navigate to Contents folder, then Resources folder. Find the file
named: package_updatable.
3a. Highlight the package_updatable file and right-click, choose "Get
Info."
3b. When Info window pops open, click on padlock in lower right
corner. Another window asking for your admin. password will pop up,
type in your admin password and padlock should unlock with that
satisfying open vault sound!
3d. In Info window click on gray triangle to show Sharing &
Permissions. You need to change Privilege for your Admin. account from
"Read only" to "Read & Write," click on up/down triangles to do this.
3d. Click on padlock to lock file and close window.
4. Highlight the package_updatable file and right-click, choose "Open
With" then "Other ..." Click thru (ignore) the warning about opening
Unix files. The Application folder in the Finder will be open, scroll
down and choose TextEdit.
4a. TextEdit will have opened the file. Scroll down to find the
following lines and delete them:
---
if not found_valid_version:
sys.exit(48)
---
In the File menu of TextEdit, choose Save. The file should close.
Close the Finder.
5. Double-click on Office 2008 update file on your desktop. Follow on-
screen update instructions as normal and hopefully that's it.
6. Re-boot, open up Office 2008 Apps and get on with your life!

P.S. To install 12.1.4, I found you need to install 12.1.3 first using
the above steps, re-boot, and then use the above steps before
installing 12.1.4, and re-boot. So far, it's working fine for me.

I didn't have this problem with my previous Office 2008 updates, but I
have frequently used Monolingual to remove excess language files from
my hard drive to save space. But that seems to be effecting these
Office updates so I guess I may stop that practice, luckily my current
HD has plenty of space for now ... I am running OSX 10.5.5 on an Intel
2.5GHz MacBook Pro.

Hope this helps and can't wait for the 12.1.5 update!

I can confirm the Restart thing worked for me as I was having the same problem. It is a pain that the program is that finicky but what can you do. :)
