12.1.5 update doesn't update Excel version number

Version: 2008

Processor: Intel

I just installed the 12.1.5 update for Office 2008. After I installed the update, the version number for all the apps say:

Version: 12.1.5 (081119)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.5

except Excel which says:

Version: 12.1.3 (081119)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.5

I'm seeing this on 2 different machines.

Anyone else seeing this?

Hopefully, everyone is seeing this. This is the correct version after the
update. In each update, not all components get updated. Excel just got
bumped to 12.1.3 dated November 19, 2008. This is correct!

Thanks Bob.

I had posted this on another forum and someone there said that their Excel was listed at 12.1.5.

So that's why I wanted to check.

And, I'm being led to believe that there may indeed be an install problem
which I also have. Stay tuned, and I'll post what I learn.

Bob,

I'm working with someone at Microsoft to try to identify what the problem is. I'll report back here as well on the findings.

I have the same problem not only with excel but also with power point. Word and Entourage list the correct version 12.1.5.

I applied the update and had problems with the version number of Excel and PowerPoint, both of which still show 12.1.3 (081119). Word and Entourage showed the latest version 12.1.5(081119).

I think its a big screwup on the installer. Just tried one of the issues that Excel 12.1.5 is supposed to fix :-
The BIN2OCT, BIN2HEX, OCT2BIN, OCT2HEX, DEC2BIN, DEC2OCT, DEC2HEX, HEX2BIN, and HEX2OCT functions return a #NUM! error when you pass 0 as the number argument and you do not provide a places argument.

I entered =BIN2OCT(0) in Excel and it returned #NUM!. So, I guess Excel has not been updated to 12.1.5 in my computer.

Can someone with the correct version (12.1.5) of Excel try this out and see if you get this problem rectified? Thanks.

I removed all traces of Microsoft Office 2008 from my computer (i.e. the semi-failed 12.1.5 update) last night.

Started again from the install disk for 12.0. Then updated to SP1 (i.e. 12.1.0) and proceeded to install the combo 12.1.5 update.

Now, Word, Excel, PPT and ENT shows the correct version 12.1.5 and the BIN2OCT, etc. issue have been fixed in Excel as stated in the release notes from MSFT.

I still didn't know what caused the failed installation in the first place but its a pain in the butt to restore all my toolbars in Word, Excel & PPT after having spent some time customizing them before.

I followed CK instructions, but for me it was worst.
Now Excel and Powerpoint say:

Version: 12.1.0 (081119)

Latest Installed Update: 12.1.5

Please help!

Still the same!!!

I'm not an english speaker but I'm gonna do my best.
I had exactly the same problem as Netnothing:

"Version: 12.1.5 (081119)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.5

except Excel and Powerpoint which say:
Version: 12.1.3 (081119)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.5"

I attempted twice to resolve this issue.

First time:

I followed CK instructions
- I removed all traces of Microsoft Office 2008 from my computer
- Started again from the install disk for 12.0
- I downloaded manually sp1 (12.1) from mactopia and installed it.
- Version numbers were right in all office programs. (12.1.0)
- I downloaded manually update 12.1.5 from mactopia and installed it.
- Version numbers were right only in word and entourage (12.1.5), and wrong in excel and power point (12.1.0)

Second chance

- I removed all traces of Microsoft Office 2008 from my computer and restarted.
- Started again from the install disk for 12.0
- I let microsoft autoupdate detected new updates for office 2008. It detected 12.1.3 update. I installed it. Versions were right in all programs (12.1.3)
- Restarted. Again I let autoupdate to detect new updates. It detected 12.1.4. I installed it. Versions were wrong in all programs, including word and entourage

Version: 12.1.3 (080930)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.4

- Restarted. Autoupdate did not detect any necessary update, so I downloaded 12.1.5 manually and Installed it.

- I went back exactly to the beginning:
"Version: 12.1.5 (081119)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.5

except Excel and Powerpoint which say:
Version: 12.1.3 (081119)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.5"

I would like to know what exactly CK did to resolve this.

I appreciate any help

Lets try this one more time. Here's what I did to my MBP.

I removed all traces of MS Office for Mac 2008 from my computer (including any file with the Microsoft name to it). This includes :-
1. Drag the "Microsoft Office 2008" folder in my /Users/username/Applications folder to Trash.
2. Drag the "Microsoft Messenger" application in /Users/username/Applications folder to Trash.
3. Go to /Users/username/Documents and drag the "Microsoft User Data" to Trash.
4. Go to /Users/username/Library/Preferences; delete all the "com.microsoft.xxx.plist" files and delete the "Microsoft" folder.
5. Go to /Users/username/Library/Application Support; delete the "Microsoft" folder.
6. Go to /Users/username/Library/Caches; delete the "Microsoft Office" folder, delete any file in there which starts with "com.microsoft.xxx.yyy"
7. Go to Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support; delete the "Microsoft" folder.
8. Since I installed "Solver" for Excel, I also deleted that application from my /Users/username/Applications folder.

At this point, I am almost 99% sure I have removed any reference to Microsoft applications from my MBP. I restarted the machine.

Then, I installed the Microsoft Office 2008 Standard software again. When it was done, I launched Word, Excel, PPT and ENT to verify the version 12.0.0 is installed.

Next, I installed SP1 (12.1.0). The dmg file is "Office2008-1210UpdateEN.dmg" which showed 188,815,075 bytes. When it was done, I launched Word, Excel, PPT and ENT to verify the version 12.1.0 is installed.

Finally, I installed 12.1.5. The dmg file is "Office2008-1215UpdateEN.dmg" which showed 108,597,061 bytes. When it was done, I launched Word, Excel, PPT and ENT to verify the version 12.1.5 is installed.

I didn't use autoupdate for the whole procedure and it worked for my MBP. Good luck!

Nearly forgot this one minor thing ...

Remove the Word, Excel, PPT and ENT and MSN Messenger icons from the dock.

Now, I'm 100% certain I have removed all traces of MSFT applications from my MBP before the re-installation of 12.0, updates to 12.1.0 and 12.1.5.

Not working for me!!
Thanks for your posts CK but I haven't had any luck

I'm 100% that I have done every step you did.(I'm pretty sure)
I removed all traces of Microsoft the way you indicated. I installed manually 12.1.0. and 12.1.5 updates. But for excel and powerpoint I get this:
Version: 12.1.0 (081119)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.5

I think this is worst because I don't even have 12.1.3 update installed in excel and powerpoint.

When I was installing 12.1.5 update I noticed that it never said "installing excel or installing power point" I just saw "installing word"

I'm going to reinstall again, and update using autoupdate to have at least 12.1.3 versions.

Please Microsoft fix this!!!

I've seen a few posts like this that indicate that something went wrong with
12.1.5 installs. You can get back up and running with relative speed and no
loss of preferences and settings by following the steps at this link:

Finally!!!!

The link that Pat gave in his post sends to the solution.

The trick is to NOT open office until you have installed the 12.1.5 update.

you'd better check pat's link to a mactopia site.

Thanks everybody

Ditto, worked for me too.

Yup, this workflow worked for me as well:

- drag your Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the trash and empty the trash.

- Then, from your DVD install Office.

- Follow this by applying the 12.1.0 update from <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downlo...d=395D1487-A3A6-4106-A0F8-4D6E1D6D89D2#viewer>

- Restart your machine (not necessary, but ensures that there are no issues finding office with the next update)

- Apply the 12.1.5 update from <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downlo...d=AB31A564-43D2-45BD-98BF-19E9CA477B62#viewer>

Worked perfectly. Everything is at the right version, and all my prefs and settings were kept intact.
