12.1.7 breaking PPC binary?

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

When I install the Mac Office 12.1.7 update on my 1.25GHz G4 iMac, I am no longer able to open any of my Office 2008 applications. They all appear in the Finder with a slash through them and when I try to launch any of them, I get a message like, ""You can't open the application Microsoft Word.app because it is not supported on this architecture" I had to delete Office 2008 and re-install it. When I applied the 12.1.7 update a second time, the same thing happened. I finally deleted a re-installed again and updated only to 12.1.5 and the apps run fine. What's wrong with the 12.1.7 update though with my PowerPC machine?

Yours is the first post on this problem. I would think if it had broken for
everyone on an older machine, we would have heard complaints before. I'll
look into this and if I find out something I will get back.

Actually the problem only manifests itself with the standalone updater package. When the update is run from AutoUpdate, the applications are okay following the install.

Go to this folder and delete the receipts for Office 2008 and then run the
12.1.7 updater. They will all start with "Office2008". I have 56 receipts
for Office 2008. Your install might be slightly different, but I wanted to
show you there are a lot of receipts.

Did you by chance run the updater twice? If yes, in what order? I'm guessing
you did the standalone updater first then the AutoUpdater next.

I ran the standalone updater on my MDD dual 1.42GHz computer at home
with no problems.

I believe it's the running it twice that is causing the issue.

I believe it's the running it twice that is causing the issue.
Except that I didn't run it twice. Here's the steps that were taken.

1.) Ran standalone 12.1.7 updater. Update ran to completion, but the applications were unusable afterward.

2.) Deleted MS Office 2008 and associated Library files

3.) Reinstalled MS Ofice 2008 v 12.1.1

4.) Ran standalone 12.1.7 updater. Update ran to completion, but the applications were unusable afterwards

5.) Deleted MS Office 2008 and associated Library files

6.) Reinstalled MS Ofice 2008 v 12.1.1

7.) Ran standalone 12.1.5 updater. Update ran to completion and applications launched without a problem following update

8.) Ran AutoUpdater and let 12.1.7 update download and install. Update ran to completion and applications launched without a problem following update.

Thanks for your detailed steps.

launched without a problem following update

8.) Ran AutoUpdater and let 12.1.7 update download and install. Update ran to

The 12.1.5 updater is rolling into the 12.1.7 updater. Any reinstalls would
only require the 12.1.0 and 12.1.7 updater. Newer CDs came with 12.1.0
installed.

It's great they are rolling the older updaters into the combo so we don't
have so many updaters to re-install.

Here is the problem. The permissions are being set incorrectly when running the standalone updater.

/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word.app/Contents/

drwxrwxr-x 9 root admin 306 May 12 10:12 .
drwxrwxr-x@ 3 root admin 102 May 12 10:16 ..
drwxrwxr-x 20 root admin 680 May 12 10:07 Frameworks
-rwx--x--x 1 root admin 20450 May 12 10:16 Info.plist
drwxrwxr-x 3 root admin 102 May 12 10:12 MacOS
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root admin 9 Dec 1 2007 PkgInfo
drwxrwxr-x 3 root admin 102 Dec 1 2007 Plugins
drwxrwxr-x 981 root admin 33354 May 12 10:16 Resources
-rwx--x--x 1 root admin 146 May 12 10:16 version.plist

If I change access permissions on the Info.plist and version.plist files, the applications will open without a problem.
