18 digit number

i typed the 18 digit number, 272908000000012040 in Excel. the number is
displayed in Scientific notation. However, the number in the edit box
appears as 272908000000012000. If the number is formated as number, it
still reads wrong.

What am I doing wrong? I want to custom format the number to read
27-29-08-000000-012040. However, excel changes the last three digits
to 000.

Excel can only handle 15 digits. You may want to format it as text if you
are not using it in calculations.

Excel have 15 digits precision thus the truncation, precede the entry with
an apostrophe when you enter it and enter the
hyphens as well. I assume you are not calculating anything
