2.1.1 Update for MS Office for MAC 2008

Ed_B

I download the update 2.1.1 Update for MS Office for MAC 2008. Complete the update, (anyway it says it is complete). Then check any Word/Excel/Powerpoint and they all say they are still the old version. Ver. 12.0.0 (071130).
Question is: How do I make the update work?

The updates for those programs have not yet been released.

Only the update for the updater, if that makes sense...

Claude is correct:

The update "has" worked. It was simply updating the installer so that the
update will install when it arrives.

Cheers

Hi Richard:

I suspect that when you took Office off, you didn't run the Remove Office
tool? If so, AutoUpdate will be a bit confused.

Have a look in /Users/~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/

What version is the application? If it's 2.1.2, it's OK, the update has
worked.

Cheers

Microsoft speaks Corporate American. It's a language almost entirely devoid
of meaning.

And Microsoft Legal Department still believes that people actually "read"
the dialog boxes that appear on the screen when they click buttons. They
don't get out much...

If you 'had' read it, and hauled out a dictionary, and carefully parsed what
was written their, and taken careful note of what it DIDN'T say, you might
have worked out that this updater updated only the updater.

No ordinary mortal would have. Those of us involved in the beta test had to
ask the person who developed the application to find this out.

But Microsoft thinks it did display a message that told you :)

Cheers

Hi John - thanks for your help. I checked where you suggested, and the the
version of the updater is "MAU2.0" so the updater hasn't worked

should I delete 2.0 and run the updater again??

Keep reading. There are two locations. You need to check the one in the root
library. There should only be one. I'll get a clarification over why there
are two. It doesn't appear to hurt leaving the one in User's for now that
was not updated.

root/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/

I had to run the standalone to get the root MAU to update. It now shows
correctly in About AutoUpdate and is no longer looking again for the
updater.

Download standalone AutoUpdate 2.1.1

I Richard:

Keep looking :) It appears these things can be scattered all over the
system. There is potentially one for Office 2004, one for Silverlight, one
for Office 2008 and one for Messenger.

The only one that will be "in service" is the latest one: that's the one
that is registered in the Operating System, and that's the one all the
applications will call when they go for an update.

Diane is trying to find out why they don't clean up their mess, instead of
leaving everyone's system littered with dead bodies :)

Cheers

Thank you - I am still trying to get this auto updater to work, without much
success, but you comments and advice really help me believe light is "at the
end of the tunnel"

I'll try the stand alone file

I ran Microsoft AutoUpdate 2.1.0 located in Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/ to see if there were any updates for Office. It said there was an update for the Updater (2.1.1). I went through the process several times but the AutoUpdate never updated to 2.1.1 in the above location.

After reading your posts, I went to "Harddisk"/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/ and saw that the AutoUpdater there was the correct 2.1.1. So I opened a new Finder window, went to the other AutoUpdater location and deleted it. Then copied the 2.1.1 from the above location to the location first mentioned.

And it now works. Typical Microsoft to make something that should be easy and make it difficult. Why do I own Office again? :)

There are actually two version of the MAU. One for the older pre- Office
2008 and a new type for Office 2008. If you have both Office 2008 and Office
2004 or older, you will need both MAU applications.

Moving the file out of it's default location could present problems.

There was a change in the way Office installs now. It uses the Apple package
installer rather than the old VISE installer. Each type requires it's own
MAU to find the updates.
