2 caption text boxes next to each other...numbering is inaccurate

Word 2000
Windows XP

I have a Word document with a number of pictures pasted into it. Some
pictures are small enough to have side-by-side in the document. Their layout
is square.

All pictures have an associated caption with autonumbering. The caption is
a text box. There is not a list of figures in the document. The numbering
of the pictures works throughout the document, however those pictures that
are pasted side-by-side the numbering is backwards. For example, the left
caption, relative to the page, is numbered Figure 8 and the right caption is
numbered Figure 7.

I have tried to delete the caption and reinsert it. I have used the mouse
to move the captions. None have worked.

This only takes place when the pictures are side-by-side and not when they
are placed on top of each other.

Caption numbering depends on SEQ fields in Word, and SEQ fields in text
boxes are numbered based on the relative position of the text box anchors.
For the two problem text boxes, you will have to drag the anchors so that
the "first" (lower number) text box is anchored to a paragraph earlier in
the text.

To see text box anchors, turn on nonprinting marks, for example by pressing
Ctrl+Shift+8. You will see the anchor for a text box (or any object) when
you select it.

For more on object anchors, see
