2 meg picture - Need a fixed size box

I'm putting a 2 meg .jpg picture on a site for a photographer and it is
giant. I've tried to resize thru F.Page and using an editor, but they make
the photo distorted and not as clear as the original. Is there a way to set
a fixed size box in F.Page that will resize the photo without loosing the
resolution? Also, I've visited some websites where a large picture downloads
into my browser and like magic, it resizes itself to fit in my browser
window. This would be even better. Any suggestions? Thanks, Chris

My guess is the photographer might have Photoshop or one
of the other graphics programs recommended by Rob. Have
he/she resize this to say 700 pixels in width and give
you that file to use on the site. This will save you the
need to purchase or download the prgram and also save you
having to learn how to use it.

As Rob suggests, even if you find a way to resize the
image on the website, the entire 2 Mb file will have to
be downloaded. I am on dialup and I wouldn't wait long
enough for that size file to download just to see a
picture. I would simply give up and leave the site.

To save everyone some time, I am going to anticipate a
future question: how do I keep users from "stealing" the
photos on the site. This is probably the most asked
question on this newsgroup. Do a search of the newsgroup
for the many replies to this question.

Don't use FP to resize/optimize images. Use a third

party image editor - Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Photo
Elements, IrFanView.

There is *absolutely* no reason to put an image that big

online. You can probably optimize that down to a 20-30K
image and NOT notice a difference on the net. Besides
people are not gonna wait for a 2 meg image to
download...they'll leave immediately no matter how pretty
it is.

Resize it to the desired size PRIOR to putting it on your website.
