2 Pages per Sheet Numbering

BACKGROUND: OS Windows 2000 Pro, MS Word 2002. Have manuscript of about 200
pages typed on Two columns, landscape, on 8-1/2 x 11 sheet (100 sheets);
that is, Two pages on 1 sheet. I need to number sequentially 1-200. MS Word,
incomprehensibly, does not provide the "how to" do it, neither a 1,300+page
Word Manual. Instructions received from one expert failed, as explained
below.

RECOMMENDATIONS RECEIVED: With the header/footer toolbar displayed, insert
the following fields for the smaller and larger number (understood as being
the left- and right-hand side column or page): Ctrl+F9. That will insert
field braces. Inside the braces, click on the Page Number button to insert a
{PAGE} field. Then, add text so that the field looks like this
{={PAGE}*2-1}. Following the same procedure, format a field to look like
this (assumed to mean: "format a field on the right-hand side column or
page"): {={PAGE}*2}.

MY RESULTS: Assuming the "click on the Page Number button" meant the "Insert
Page Number" button on the header/footer toolbar, and that the two outside
braces are to be added manually, the result is a "Syntax Error" line on both
the left- and the right-hand side. I further experimented with inserting all
entries inside the {PAGE} field: same result, as well other attempts.

CONCLUSION: It is evident that somehow a step is missing in the
recommendations, that I am not following the exact meaning of them, or
that...Word just does not like what I am doing.

I have detailed the procedures in the event the same expert who attempted to
help may be so kind as to test on own computer and to complete the
instructions or clarify what I am doing inconsistent with the directions.

Thank you so much, Suzanne, for your kindness. You resolved the main
problem. I still have some; let me explain:

1. On Word 2002: It has, indeed, the Page Setup>Margins>2 pages per sheet. I
had tried it before. But it provides for two pages top/bottom or
side-to-side, exclusively on PORTRAIT, very practical mainly for brochures,
etc. Microsoft forgot that two pages, side by side, on LANDSCAPE has been
one of the most common formats for camera-ready manuscripts for modern
printing machines. Therefore, this plan did not work for me.

2. Your second suggestions (formulas)...WORKED! Thanks! I am now attempting
to resolve the new issues raised as a consequece --unsuccessfully:
a. Possibilities of modifying your formulas to print the numbers in the
format "- 1 -" instead of the default " 1 ". When I tried, I
received a "Syntax Error".
b. The numbers are by default printed exactly on the line after the last
line of the text. Is it possible to leave one blank line in between?
It looks odd without that line.
c. How could I position the page numbers at the center of each of the
two pages per sheet? I tried manually, but not only it is not exact
but also when one number is moved the other moves simultaneously.

The mvps group's help and yours in particular are extremely helpful. Thanks

blank line be inserted automatically?

If you have portrait orientation selected when you choose "2 pages per
sheet," you do get two portrait pages side by side on a landscape page. If
you have landscape selected, you get two landscape pages, top and bottom, on
a portrait page.

To position the formula page numbers, you can use center-aligneded tab
stops.
