2 problems with MS Word, Excel, PDF file etc

My PC used to work just fine.

I have 2 problems with attachments.

1. I cannot open attachments from my email accounts at Yahoo, and
Hotmail like MS word, Excel PDF
file ( adobe)

However if I receive the attachment vai my comcast email address which
drops into my Outlook Express on my desktop, I can open the doc.

2. Once I open the attachment via OE an icon for every attachment gets
created on my desktop. If I open the attachment a second time, a
second icon is created on my desk top.

Can any one pls. help me solve this problem.

I have a Win Me, 800 MHZ, 20GB HD and 176 RAM.

Thanks
Tina

Re: Icon opens on my desktop up everytime I open a Word doc

I moved the Word program back to MS office. It was somwehere else.I do
not remember where. (For a few days the icons stopped opening up ) I
thought that I had solved the problem.

But now they are back. I still see Word in MS office. But I still get
the icons on my desktop everytime I open a word doc. So I did not do a
good job or complete job.

i checked the properties of the icons of Word docs on my desktop.

It says:
C:Windows\Desktop.

So I guess this is the problem. I am NOT technical. Can anyone help me
solve this ?

FYI: I ran Scandisk, defrag and Adaware/Spybot.

Pls. HELP !

thanks

If you moved yr Word App, winword.exe?, without uninstalling then
reinstalling, the reg settings are likely to be incorrect.
The Icon properties; does the target point to a word document?
If you create a new document, and save it, I assume, if I understand you
correctly, an icon appears on yr desktop?
Is there a corresponding doc in the My Documents Folder?
In Word/Tools/options, check the settings for file locations and backup

I did EXACTLY what you said ie in Word, tools, Options, Location etc.
and I found the location to be My Documents.

So I did not have to change anything. The location was NOT my
desktop.

But yet everytime I open a Word doc it gets saved to my Desktop and
the icon is there permanently. I have to manually transfer them to the
recycle bin.

When I click on properties of the Word doc icon on my desktop it says
for location:
C/Windows/desktop

Why is that ?

I am NOT technical so pls. give me detailed instructions.

thanks ever so much

Tina
