How do I change the template? And how do I change the current manner of showing documents on the desktop that I've saved? I want them to be in order of date of editing, rather than by date of origin. Thanks.

1) Use File>Open to open the template, then you can change it and save it.

2) It's not recommended to save documents on the desktop, because you do
get a muddle. See the Mac Help for other ideas.

Sorry, without version information we can't answer.

Thanks, John. Appreciate your time. Just to follow up: I've discovered that you can alter how documents are stored on the desktop by using Finder, then View. This apparently controls the desktop. One doesn't have to be in Word at all. And I've got Office 2008, so I have Word 12.0.0.
