2 styles at the same outline level

Dave

Firstly using Word 2000.
I am trying to create a document where there are 2 styles at the same
outline level. Using the example below, I have 2 styles at the 2nd level
(paragraph & heading 2). Can this be done?
1 (heading 1)
1.1 (paragraph)
1.2 (paragraph)

2 (heading 1)
2.1 (paragraph)
2.2 (paragraph)

3 (heading 1)
3.1 (heading 2)
3.1.1 (paragraph)

4 (heading 1)
4.1 (paragraph)

Regards
Dave

You can base the "ordinary" paragraph style on the Heading 2 style. In
the Modify Style dialog box, for "Based on," choose "Heading 2."

Make sure not to alter the *numbering* settings of the child style,
and it should work fine.

Sorry I must not understand. How do I get the paragraph style numbering to
follow the heading 1 numbering. Note that I've set the paragraph style to be
based on the Heading 2 style. Using my example in the initial post, I want
the paragraph after 2 (heading 1) to have the numbering 2.1, but when I use
the paragraph style it is seen as 1.3.

Thanks
Dave

I realize that I misunderstood your first message. A single style can
not be used to follow the numbering of multiple different heading
styles. Instead, you would have to base one style on Heading 2 and
another style on Heading 3, and then apply the appropriate style
whenever you want to "re-use" heading numbering.

Alternatively, create numbering using LISTNUM or AUTONUMLGL fields.
