2000 won't open

I have Word 2000 that will not open. I know others have had the problem too,
and you suggest http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.
I've been there several times and done EVERYTHING suggested to fix the
problem. Still won't open. I've repaired about 3 times, I've uninstalled
and reinstalled; and I've run my virus program. Nothing works. What now?
The only time it will open is if I go to Start/Run/winword.exe /a. But, that
only works each time I do that, it doesn't repair the problem. it is
suggested not to continually open word using that method. What can I do now?

One thing to add. when I repair/install Word, I get the follwoing Microsoft
Server Extension error message: Unable to access configuration for Microsoft
Personal Web Server. (I'm running WinXP & know that Personal Web Server is
not available for XP Personal, so I'm really confused)

Did you ever resolve the Word startup problem? I am having the same issue
and can't figure it out.

If Word runs properly when you start it with the /a switch, then the problem
is with (a) Normal.dot, (b) the Registry, (c) an add-in, or (d) the printer
driver. It's that simple.

Suzanne,

Thanks for the info. It does open with the /a. Otherwise, it just goes
directly to non-response mode.

I tried searching for Normal.dot, but it evidently does not exist on my
computer. I was going to rename it to Normal.old

How would I fix the Registry? I looked in the article you point to, but I
still do not understand what I am supposed to do with the Registry.

I will try the printer driver to see if that is it.

There are no add-ins that I know of, at least nothing that has been added
since Word stopped working last week (it was fine prior to last Thursday).

Thanks again

Jim
