2002 .pst files to outlook 2003

i have outlook 2002 (xp) on my desktop and now have the new 2003 outlook on
my laptop. all of my contacts on my desktop needs to be put on my laptop. I
have copied the .pst files from my desktop onto a CD. I have noticed the file
in the outlook folder where they should go appears to be a .xml file and not
a .pst file.
How do i get the .pst file into outlook 2003. If i need to convert this file
how do i do so or is there a different folder it goes in then in 2002.
(laptop is XP home and desktop is XP professional)

You can put the file wherever you want. Then open it using File | Open (in
Outlook only, not in Windows).

Got that working, just by opening the file in the steps you gave, are they
now saved or am i going to have to always use the file open method?

Also i noticed it did not open all the emails i had from my other system,
what do i need to do to open all of my emails i have from the desktop, i
thought all data was saved in the .pst file (contacts, emails, addressbook,
etc)

The .PST file should always be open in Outlook now unless you manually close
it. You're right, all data should be in that .PST file...could there have
been more than one .PST file in use on your old system?
