2003 drops 00's but not Word 2000 withExcel

does anyone have a fix for this one?
When I merge in Word 2000 with Excel Zip Codes, the
leading zero's are not dropped.
When I merge in Word 2003, the leading zero's are dropped.
I know about using '00111 to make it work with 00111 but
I don't want to add the apostrophe to all the zips.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !
