[2003] Error message when opening a project

Cabral

Hi all,

The project manager open a project with MS Project Professional 2003
SP2 connected to Project Server 2003 SP2a and get the following error
message:

An error occurred while trying to access Project Server.
This could be caused by the following:
* Low memory.
* Some components might not be installed or registered properly on
your computer.
* Some components might have become unstable.
Try the following:
* Free up available memory by closing any programs, projects, or
windows you are not using, and then try again.
* Restart the computer.

We´ve already tried to restart the computer and the server but the
error continues.
This error appears only with this specific project, but in different
machines.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Cabral, If I remember correctly, this can be solved by deleting the user
profile on the computer. Its a drastic step, so you depending on your setup
you might want to use the User State Migration Tool to save it beforehand.

But does anyone know what in the profile is broken. Everything now is just
delete the profile which doesn't appear to be a fantastic solution. Is it a
config file, the global.mpt, etc.? Anyone have any luck identifying this.
It also appears that when the project is last saved in gant chart view is
when we have these issues. Does SP3 address this?

I'm not sure who knows exactly what the issue is, I picked this up from
Microsoft themselves. If you are able to replicate it, then I would raise a
support call with them. I've not heard that SP3 fixes this, but before MS
would take your support call they would recommend you are on SP3 so it is
probably a good way forward for now.

Hi Cabral,

Yes, this terrorized us also, until we discovered a pattern. This appears to
occur when:
1. PM opens project from project server
2. PM navigates to Collaborate->Update Project Progress.
3. View displayed: “View task changes submitted by resourcesâ€
4. PM may or may not accept updates here… but
5. PM immediately closes Project Pro with this view displayed
6. Problem occurs as a non fatal error when same PM opens same project.
7. Problem occurs as a fatal error when any other person opens same project.

The trick is to close Project Pro with some other view, besides “View task
changes submitted by resources†displayed. I know that this sounds highly
idiosyncratic, but we appear to have eliminated the problem in our shop.
