2003 Multi-level lists

MDavison

I need to create a custom a style sheet for a principle using all 9 levels
of Numbering. But in Word 2003, I think I have everything set and associated
with Heading styles and when I am in a list and hit RETURN, I DON'T get the
next list number and tab DOES NOT indent and give me the next subordinate
level. Shift+Tab also DOES NOT resolve to the previous heading/level the way
it should. Does anyone know what is going on? I have already turned OFF
Tools>Options>Editing>Keep track of formatting, but that hasn't fixed the
whole problem.

This is critical, so any help you have, please cc me directly at
(e-mail address removed)

Thanks!

Do you think you cross-posted to enough NGs?

There is no reason to expect that you will get the next outline level when
you press Enter unless you have set a different heading style as the "Style
for following paragraph." By default, the style following headings is set to
Normal. If you are using a heading style for every paragraph, you need to
not only change the following style but also clear the "Keep with next"
property for all but the top level or two.

If you want to be able to use Tab and Shift+Tab to change outline levels,
you must have the appropriate option enabled. The location of this option
varies among versions; since you don't state which version you are using, I
can't tell you where to find it, but Alt+Shift+Right/Left Arrow will
demote/promote in every version.

You don't have to be catty and I believe 2003 is stated right in my Subject
line. I need to keep the keystrokes as SIMPLE as possible for the particular
user in question.

Try putting the "Professional" back in MVP, OK?

Now, now, *who* exactly is catty ...

Try putting the "Professional" back in MVP, OK?

.... and unprofessional (i.e.: crosspostings and expecting "cc" answers)?

Suzanne told you all it needs to resolve your problem. If you don't want
to make fix your customer's settings (something that is advisable in any
case since "everything should be as simple as possible ...), then you
surely can look up via Tools | Customize | Keyboard any given shortcut
or command and reassign it.

The culprit(s) would be OutlineDemote and (surprisingly) OutlinePromote.

Actually- the Culprit is in AutoCorrect As you type. Our firm as most of
those turned off to prevent mutilation of our templates. After all was said
and done, I just needed to turn back on "Set left and first indents with tab
and backspaces", since I had already re-activated the Auto Bulleted and
numbered lists. Between this and the crystal clear instructions from
Shauna's website, I have what I need.
Thanks.

Sorry; I tend to overlook subject lines sometimes in concentrating on
message content (and you could have been referring to the number of lists
<g>). In Word 2003, check the box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs
and backspaces" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect
Options. It doesn't sound relevant, but it is.
