2003 - Multiple Winword.exe Processes Running

I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’m getting up to 3
winword.exe files loaded on the Processes tab of Task Manager. I notice this
two ways:

1) is multiple Word buttons on the TaskBar even though I have selected group
related and other applications group fine

2) troubleshooting a lock up in another app on the Processes tab.

Any idea to as to where to start looking for this?

Lori, as a Helpdesk Supervisor I've seen this in my office only about three
or four times amongst my users (316). The only thing they had in common was
the fact that their file locations pointer for their normal.dot was pointing
to a network folder. When changed to a location on the local computer
(c:\program files\microsoft office\templates) the problem went away. I hope
