2003 vs. 2007 runtime

Daniel

Hello,

I have office 2003 and have been developing access db with 2000 and 2003 for
a while. I now have the need to produce runtime version for a new project
and was wondering...

Am I better to get the runtime tools for 2003 or purchasing 2007 (since I
heard the runtime tools are free? For 2007 are they available yet?

Thank you,

Daniel

Hi, Daniel.
For 2007 are they available yet?

They're scheduled to be released around March 2007:

One may rely on this expected date only if Microsoft doesn't have a
reputation for missing release dates.

It depends upon your time frame, the training needs of the users, and the
upgrade schedule of the organization.

If the need is immediate, then purchase the Visual Studio Tools for Office
2005 (VSTO). If you can wait a few months -- or more -- wait for the Access
2007 Runtime to be released.

If the users need training to get up to speed on Access 2007 because they
already have experience on an earlier version, then stick with the Access
2003 Runtime. If they have no experience with Access, then training costs
have little bearing on which version is used. However, Microsoft is
marketing Access 2007 with the pitch that it's easier for novices to learn
on than earlier versions were.

If the organization is upgrading to Office 2007 soon enough, then wait for
the Access 2007 Runtime to be released.
