2003 word doc crashing in 2000 and unpatched 2002

Don't suppose anyone can suggest to me why the seamingly empty document at
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~aguess/doc crashes in earlier versions of
word?

The document was a 2.5Mb file with 44 pages full of tables, objects,
diagrams etc. In my attempt to try and delete what was crashing word 2000 i
finally got down to an empty document and it still crashes word 2000 (or
unpatched 2002's).

I've got round it in word 2002 by patching it to the latest version but can
not open it in word 2000 even with every patch loaded. It's also a worry if
we have to send documents to clients as we don't know if it will end up
crashing on their systems or not.

Alex

I should add that the original 2.5mb document also crashes in word 2000 if I
save it as a rtf document (25Mb !!).

SOLUTION

for anyone who uses google groups like i do ....

The style names were too long. For some reason in word 2003 some automatic
styles were being added and word gave them the names of the complete style
for example 'Heading 2,Project 2,RFS
2,h2,Major,Major1,Major2,Major11,sub-sect,21,sub-sect1,22,sub-sect2,23,sub-sect3,24,sub-sect4,25,sub-sect5,(1.1,1.2,1.3
etc),section
header,Major3,Major12,Major21,Major111,26,sub-sect6,211,sub-sect11,221,sub-sect21,231,241,PARA2'

This is fine for word 2003 and a patched word 2002 (XP) but makes word 2000
crash. Modifying these styles and changing the names solved the problem.

Not that i cba to count how long that style name is but I guess it's a 256
overflow marlarky :/

Alex
