The 'th' (5th) and the smiling face for 
were working but have stopped. I
have looked at the settings and they are still selected as follows:
Tools|Options|Mail Format|Editor Options|Proofing|AutoCorrect Options| and
then
AutoCorrect - selected "Replace text as you type" followed by a default
table of items.
and
AutoFormat As You Type - all 6 "Replace as you type" items selected.
Other selections (fonts, spell check, etc.) continue to function properly.
How to fix this?
