2007 Not behaving

L

Lexisch

I have installed a copy of Office2007 Enterprise. Everything seems to work
perfectly except for Word. When I go into Word Options, I can't click on
anything. I am also having a tough time selecting text in my document.

Also when I double click on a word attachment, word opens but the document
doesn't. It also happens if I save the document and then double click on it.
If I open word and then the document, it behaves.

I have uninstalled Word, restarted my computer and re-installed Word. I've
done the trouble shooter, with no relief from this problem.

A second report with almost identical symptoms. Can you use click the Ribbon
commands? Can you use the keyboard to access Options and edit the document?
Is this a desktop or laptop?

L

Lexisch

In the Word options, I can't click on anything. I can access the ribbon. I
can also use the arrow keys and select a paragraph using them and the shift
key.

I'm using a desktop. My laptop works perfectly.

Search your hard drive for normal.* and see if there is more than one of the
beasts on your drive.

Actually I have no normal.* for word. I have some normal.png. Checked my
home network drive.

There has to be at least one: in the case of Word 2007, it will be
normal.dotx. I was expecting to find one or more legacy normal.dot templates
from a previous installation of Word causing the problem.

To find normal.*, you must have enable Hidden files and System Files in
Explorer or Search will exclude them.

I did as you suggested and did find one dot and and one dotx. I deleted them
both. Restarted, and same problems.

I have a computer in my organization with the same problem. I have tried the
same options and nothing has worked. Anyone have any idea what the problem
can be?

Do you have the same problem when starting Word in safe mode (hold down Ctrl
as Word starts, and click Yes to starting in safe mode) or when starting
Word with the /a switch?

If so, and if deleting normal.* didn't fix the problem, the likely culprit
is a corrupted registry entry. Usually, it's the Data key. Since this is
Word 2007, you'd need to adjust the location for Office 12 and proceed
otherwise as shown here:

Hi Shannon,

There have been a couple of Add-ins that are known to cause this (Laserfiche and Paperport) with Word 2007. There is also at least
one USB mouse 'suite' that can cause this when it tries to use its own 'Universal Scrolling' feature. If you have that choice in
your mouse application in the Windows control panel, try adding Winword.exe to the 'exceptions' list then restart to see if that
solves it.

Also see this reply that Bob Buckland has posted: is one of these applicable
to you?

You nailed it. I remember this problem with Word 2003 on a few of our
machines, but didn't think of Laserfiche this time.

I had tried what Herb said to do, with no effect. Went into the add/remove
and modified laserfiche to no office integration, and voila....a working copy
of 2007!

Thanks Bob!

Good News!!!
After reading these posts I went the Laserfiche support website (you can
sign up for free if your company has a current LSAP). They have a hotfix for
the problem. I installed the hotfix and it problem went away!

That's not the problem I'm having. Everything works except for autocomplete.
Autocomplete works on the school computers but not on my computer. Also
since I've installed 2007 there are no words in my dictionary when I spell
check an email. I have Winxp and Outlook Express 6. Everything worked fine
when I had Office 2003. Also, in Outlook Express, I went to Tools, Options,
and on the Spelling tab under Language it shows French and that is all there
is. Nothing else to choose from.

It would be nice if when Microsoft put programs out there, they did not
charge $99 to get help to fix there screw ups.

Hi Susan,

Autocomplete suggestions, except for dates, is no longer available in Office 2007. The 'building blocks organizer' attaches to the
AutoText engine and MS's position is that it would offer too many suggestions too often. Autotext shorthand (i.e. having unique
first four or so characters then pressing F3 if *you* know that there is an Autotext that will then be triggered, still works).

The new proofing tools aren't generally seen by Outlook Express and the Windows folks (who own that app, it's not a part of Office)
haven't changed OE to work with the new proofing tools. You can install the proofing tools from a prior Office version using a
custom install (that has its own side effects) or you can add one of the 3rd party proofing tools available for Outlook Express

I installed the Proofing Tools from Office 2003 and my Spell Checker in
Outlook Express is working fine now that I have and English dictionary.

What my instructor at school and I do not understand is, why is the
autocomplete working at school when you type in the first 4 letters of a
month but not on my computer at home. We are suppose to both be running the
same Office Enterprise 2007.

Hi Susan,

Check to see what the default date format you have is by using
Alt, I, T
and then while in your document use
Alt, T, A and go to the 'Autoformat as you type' tab to see if
'Date Style' is turned on.

THIS worked, found all the normal.* and whacked them (deleted), uninstalled
the whole thing, deleted the entire office 12 (2007) directory, and all other
ofc 2007 appls... reinstalled office 2007 and it WORKS. Your suggestion
worked. All the repair and reinstalls create additional normal templates and
something broke. Spell checker now shows squiggly red lines under 4eur7yu ....

THANKS
