2007 OEM trial conversion fiasco

My boss bought a Vaio notebook with the trial Small Business version of
Office 2007 about 2 weeks ago, and wanted me to get a key to active/convert
to a valid version. I bought a key from NewEgg (SKU 9QA-00443) which arrived
today. When I try to enter it, it says it's invalid. I went to the MS support
pages, and apparently, because his trial is in "reduced functionality mode,"
it cannot be activated? It said that the software must be activated within 90
days of purchase, and it's only been about 15. Did I just waste a few hundred
dollars?

Fiascos can happen when you try to get something for nothing (or next to
nothing).

I suppose, but how so in this case? Money wasn't an object. What should I
have bought instead? That's kind of my question. The only thing I can figure
is that the trial version wasn't OEM? It was preinstalled on the laptop, so I
assumed it was (it was provided by the OEM). $240 isn't "nothing". Why bother
putting an Office trial on the laptop to begin with? I really don't know,
which is why I'm asking. I've spent tens of thousands of dollars over the
years on MS products building computers and servers for our company, so I'm
not a total newbie. I'm not trying to cheat anyone. I'm prepared to eat my
mistake, if it is one, but I'd also like to learn what I did wrong so I don't
do it again.

The Sony would appear to meet the criteria, you have used the key within 90
days, so speak to newegg, allthough dont be suprised if they try to bounce
you back to Sony - MS probably wont get involved.
