2007 paragraph numbering

Using office 2007, I have set up my heading levels as per Shauna Kelly's
instructions and assigned a ListNum name (BMS_Headings).

I need to have numbered paragraphs that continue from the previous heading eg
1 Heading 1
1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1 paragraph paragraph paragraph
1.1.2 paragraph paragraph paragraph
1.2 Another Heading 2
1.2.1 Heading 3
1.2.1.1 paragraph paragraph paragraph
1.2.1.2 paragraph paragraph paragraph

I inserted a field code at the beginning of each para as follows where the
numbering level required is 3 (following Heading 2s)
- LISTNUM BMS_Headings \l 3 \s 1 for the first para, and
- LISTNUM BMS_Headings \l 3 for subsequent paras.

Now, this worked while in the doc last week and merrily typing away.

When I go into the doc now all paragraphs are 1.1.1 or 1.1.1.1 regardless of
preceding heading number. Updating the field doesn't change the display.

I assume that this the wrong way to do this but am unsure what to try next.

....and I just noticed that some of the Heading levels seem to be reverting
back to "1" when I reopen the document eg
4
4.1
1.2
1.3

When I reapplying the style to the last CORRECT heading number, then the
following heading numbers AND paragraph numbers (using the LISTNUM) actually
work properly.

I think something is twisted... but then there is probably a better way.
