2007 Publisher HTTP Upload Problems (using Vista)

Chris Martin

I am trying to upload a 2007 MS Publisher website to godaddy.com. My
Publisher file uses Forms, and therefore uses Front Page Extensions. I have
enabled Front Page Extensions with godaddy. Typically, I use FTP to upload
to godaddy, but uploading this file using FTP will break the Front Page
Extensions (I tried that already), so I need to upload using HTTP protocol.

In Publisher 2003, you can follow the stated directions for HTTP uploading
and it works fine. However in Publisher 2007 (running Vista) when you
specify the web address (http://www.wrensummers.com) in the file Publish to
Web window as the File Name, I get the following error:

"the file name you have entered is too long or contains invalid characters.
Try again with a different name"

I am working with:

• MS Publisher 2007
• Vista
• IE7
• I do not have any special firewall or security settings enabled

Can someone please help with this problem? I've seen the same issue in the
workgroups, but no one has been able to supply an answer. I suspect it must
be a setting problem somewhere in Vista or IE7, but I have no idea where to
start looking for it.

Thoughts anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Thanks.

Thanks for the response Spike, I have looked at that, but I don't really
understand how to code for that. As a novice, I am a lot more comfortable
working in Publisher.

I realize that godaddy's solution will work, but I am now so puzzled by why
I can't seem to perfrom and HTTP upload given the above conditions, I've just
go to figure this thinkg out. There has to be an answer out there!

If you want the How to on the "Use a program from my ISP" option let us know
and we will walk you through it.
I prefer it, as the Front Page option has your email address readily
available on your web page for the web crawlers to add you to the SPAM list.

Ok Spike, if you could post that along with an other helpful information that
would be great. Keep in mind, I am a complete rookie!

Thanks.

Is your account with godaddy "Windows" or "Linux"
The setup is slightly different for each one.

While Spike is working up his instructions for changing the form properties
to work with a different form handler program from your webhost, here is
some information you can review about using the FPSE.

Prepare, publish, and maintain your Publisher Web site:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA100947601033.aspx
HTTP and FTP uploading has changed with Vista. You can read the directions
for HTTP uploading under the 'Publish a Web site to a location on the
Internet or a network' section. Also review the information 'Publish a Web
site by using FTP'. Specifically click the + sign and read how to FTP upload
with Vista. You can probably modify these to use HTTP and mapping a network
drive. Sorry, but I don't have Vista installed so have never worked through
these specific directions.

And by the way, I would probably agree with Spike, that moving away from
FPSE is probably a good move in the long run.
