In order to utilize Themes the document must contain theme elements such as
Theme fonts and Theme colors. So if say, you are using Ariel as your font
instead of one of the Theme fonts (Body or Headings listed under Theme Fonts
in the Font drop down) then you won't see a change. The same applies to any
colors you use. You need to select colors from the Themes section of the
Color pickers in order for the colors to swap with the newly selected Theme
or when using Live Preview.
If you want an example of how Themes should work and of what you need to use
in a document to utilize Themes, create a new document from one of the
Installed Templates in the New Document dialog box. They should all be
theme-enabled and you can examine the elements that have been used.
Also note that the Theme affects the entire document so selecting text first
is not necessary.
