2008 Excel crashes upon opening

Excel crashes upon opening. Whether attempting to open any existing
file or just open the program, it crashes about 10-20 seconds after
opening. Holding shift key while opening program or an existing file
allows it to stay open. However, when quitting and restarting without
the shift key pressed down the problem reappears.

Looking to get it back to normal operating procedure of simply
clicking and opening.

Notes:
-Mac OS X 10.5.4
-all sotware up to date
-permissions verified
-no additional excel or other microsoft plug-ins
-"Office 2008 autorecovery" is empty
-word & entourage open and operate fine.

UPDATE: It works fine when connected to an external monitor. But
still crashes when not connected to an external monitor. odd.

Does Excel crash only after you have the window maximized or when you toggle
the 'Mirror Displays' button?

My 2008 Excel crashes as well when attempting to open. Holding shift and
trying to launch does not work for me. Please advise.

I'm having the same problem with word 2008. It is constantly crashing, sometimes on opening on a powerpc imac running 10.5.4
