2008 Toolbar group dividing line?

J

Jonathan Duke

I was customizine the standard toolbar today and noticed that there
isn't a way to flag an item as a start of a group as was done in X &
2004. I always did it with a right- or control-click on the item to
select properties, but that doesn't work in 08.

Is the dividing line now a distinct entity and where can I find it? Or
is there no longer a way to add one?

OK, as I was writing this, I decided to read the Help entry-you can't
change the properties of an item on the standard toolbar, but you can
set the property of an item on another undocked toolbar and drag it to
standard and it appears to stick.

I don't understand why this should be so, but it's like some of the
design decisions made for '08, completely an enigma.

Cheers,
Jon

Hi Jonathan:

Yeah, well they haven't done this very well. :)

It appears that the groups are "Fixed" in the Standard and Formatting
toolbars (probably in all the built-in toolbars). This is a
partially-implemented Ribbon function from Office 2007. In PC Office, the
Chunks on the Ribbon can't be changed.

If you have made your own toolbar (and you should!!!) you can right-click
any icon you place on it. If the icon is not the left-most, the "Begin a
group" property checkbox will be enabled.

It's far better to make your own toolbars than it is to customise the
built-in ones, because if Normal.dotm goes bang (and it has been known to do
so...) you can use Organiser to copy your own toolbars back from the
smouldering ruins. You cannot copy built-in toolbars :)

Cheers
