2008 upgrade didn't remove 2004

The Office 2008 upgrade seemed to install fine (OS X 10.4.11) but it
didn't offer to remove my previous Office 2004 installation, which is
still there.

Should I just delete 2004 from Applications? Delete 2008 and start over?

Thank you,

Charles

Bizarre - it had to recognize that it's on the drive in order to do the
upgrade.

You can trash or leave 2004. There's no harm done by leaving it, and if
you need any 2004 functionality (e.g., macros, add-ins, etc.), you can
run 2004 and 2008 side-by-side just fine.

Yes, I thought it was bizarre too. When it said it couldn't find 2004
(to validate the upgrade) the pizza wheel kept spinning for about 15
minutes. Before it finished, I clicked Continue and it asked me if I
really wanted to, because otherwise it might not be able to install the
upgrade version. I let it keep searching for about another 15 minutes or
so, but then I gave up and pressed Continue again. The install seemed to
go fine anyway, except that 2004 wasn't deleted.

Is there anything else to deleting 2004 besides removing it from
Applications? I looked for an uninstaller but couldn't find one.

As Charles, I'd like to remove remnants of Office 2004 that might reside in
the System, Library or Users folders. I thought the automatic removal
process of the 2008 installer would do the job. Your counsel?

Don't drag it to the Trash - Run the Remove Office utility from the
additional Tools folder of 2004 or 2008. Alternatively you can run it from
the install disk.

Are you certain you installed 2008 an *upgrade* package rather than from a
new full retail package?

Thanks for pointing me to Remove Office. I thought I had searched Office
Help but didn't find this.

It was definitely the Upgrade installer I used. (Says "Upgrade" on the
box and disk, plus it said it was searching for a previous version that
was eligible for upgrading.)

In another thread from today, Jan. 18 ("Re: Remove Office + Option key
doesn't work"), John McGhie quotes Office Help as saying this:

"Office Installer and Remove Office use Spotlight to locate versions of
Office that are installed on your computer. If Spotlight is disabled or
does not search folders where a version of Office is located, Office
Installer and Remove Office will not be able to find versions of Office
that are eligible for upgrade, or versions of Office that you might want
to remove. Also, the search might take longer if your computer has a
slower processor or a very large hard disk."

I have Spotlight turned off (via Spotless), so this is apparently what
happened with me, although I wonder how the installer knew that I did
have an eligible upgrade version?

Also, does this mean I can't use Remove Office to remove 2004, and if
so, what can I use?
