2009 Cumulative Update for Outlook 2007

Paul

I am running Outlook 2007 (12.0.6341.5000) SPI MSO (12.0.6320.5000) and just
this weekend downloaded and installed the February 2009 Cumulative Update for
Outlook 2007.

I followed the Microsoft Support page article entitled "Outlook 2007
improvements in the February 2009 cumulative update
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=968009) and visited the following two
knowledgbase articles with associated downloads:

961752 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961752/ ) Description of the
Outlook 2007 hotfix package (Outlook.msp): February 24, 2009

For full Outlook functionality, you can install the Cumulative Update
package that is associated with the following Microsoft Knowledge Base
article:

967688 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967688/ ) Description of the
Outlook 2007 hotfix package (Outlook-en-us.msp): February 24, 2009.

I subsequently downloaded the first and installed it. Then I downloaded the
2nd and it appeared to be the same as the first. I assumed since the article
was published, MS combined the two downloads into one file.

The update ran and Outlook re-started without too long of a re-start, which
I'd expected from the various blog postings indicating a long delay may occur
due to PST file re-formatting.

Anyway, I immediately noticed an improvement in response time when changing
folders, which was one of the noted improvements.

Another change I was ready to welcome was resolution of the mounting number
of Outlook "crashes", which was becoming more than annoying. Unfortunately,
these have not stopped with the installation of the update(s).

A couple of questions....

Does anyone know how, if at all, you can confirm both required updates were
successfully installed?

Also, since Outlook 2007 is the only 2007 version Office app I'm running
(Word, Excel, Powerpoint are all Office 2003 Small Biz Edition), would I be
able to install the newly released 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2
(SP2) and if so, would you think there would be a benefit in terms of my
Outlook stability?

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

I can be emailed directly at (e-mail address removed) Thanks.

If you run MS Update, that will indicate any required crutical updates. It
will also show any failures, in the history section. Presumably you dont
have MS Update configured to either install or notify critical updates.
I cannot say I've had issues with either Outlook 2003 or 2007 versions
The pst is not effected by any update, its not re-formatted

Thanks DL. I totally forgot I could check app install history on the "Add or
Remove Programs" section of Control Panel...nice suggestion!

I do however, believe PST structures are modified with this update.
Microsoft writes "Immediately after you install the SP2 update, the first
startup of Outlook will not be fast because Outlook must update internal PST
data structures that are used in our optimizations." Just FYI...

Both are required for the best bang for your buck. As for checking, I tend
to look at some of the updates. In this case the second updates contains 3
DLL files that are not included in the primary (larger) package.

The first link you have contains the best description of what the cumulative
updates bring to the table getting you as close as you can to Office 2007
SP2. Therefore I do recommend that you try downloading/installing Office
2007 SP2 to get whatever pieces that where not included since we really
don't know what crashes you are running into with Outlook. For example,
could it be due to 3rd party applications/add-ins or something internal to
the application. Usually I suggest that folks use the safe command line
switches to see if they can isolate what might be going on. These switches
are (and covered in the online help)...

/safe
/safe:1
/safe:3
/safe:4

I would focus on the /safe:3 and /safe:4 switches when starting Outlook
because one deals with turning off custom toolbars (/safe:4) and the other
should stop most 3rd party add-ins from loading.

Thank you Neo. Based on your recommendation, I will go ahead and
download/install Office 2007 SP2 and go from there.
