23 secs to load Word file from Explorer!

Just tried to open a 30kb doc file from Explorer.
It took 23 seconds!
Word 2003 on [2.8Ghz/7200Rpm/512M/no antivirus machine]
what's with that?

I have been having the same problem with a very similar
configuration.Something i noticed was that ever alternate
opening instance of word2003 is causing a major slowdown.

If it is opening another instance of Word something is wrong. You can tell
this is happening because the Word splash screen will show up during the
opening. It will put another icon on the taskbar in normal operation but
this is not a separate instance of Word. I get the double instance when I
try opening a document from Explorer just after starting Word. I suspect
that at that time, Word is not fully loaded and whatever system marker Word
normally sets when it opens has not been set.
