237KB JPG increases Word file size by 5 MB

I am using Word 2003 SP2 and Windows XP SP2.

When I paste (embed) a 237 KB JPG into a Word document, and then save the
Word document, the Word document increases in size by a whopping 5 MB.

Does anyone know what is going on?
