Found it! Regional settings. Now why doesn't Excel use regional settings
(negative numbers in brackets for example)?

You could have asked in an Excel Newsgroup. However, choose Cells from the
Format drop down menu, click on the Number tab and choose your format....

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the Outlook people, that's not what i
meant. In Lotus, if you set regional windows settings for negative numbers
in brackets, and you type "-1" in a cell, Lotus AUTOMATICALLY formats it as
(1). Excel, although a MICROSOFT app, does NOT!

Then use Lotus.
