2nd/3rd level bullet styles not working if no bullet in first line

I¹ve created a template in PowerPoint 2004 in which the first level bullets
are a text line with no bullet while the second, third, and other levels
have bullets, dashes, etc.

The setup looks fine on the master slide but when I try to use it in a
presentation, the style and format for the sub-bullets isn¹t being applied.
After I hit return following the first level line and then press TAB to move
to a second-level bullet, PowerPoint is simply tabbing the first-line style
over, not creating a sub-bullet.

However, if I go back into the Master Slide and add a bullet of any sort to
the first line format, the sub-bullets will then work properly.

Is there any way around this apparent bug? For design purposes, we really
don¹t want bullets in the first line. However, it seems that the only way to
make it work is to copy and paste the properly formatted text onto each
slide and then type over it with the text for each slide, a manual and
time-consuming method and not one that we can put out there as part of our
corporate template.

If your background is a plain one, set the bullet color to match the background
color

Try setting a space or null character or some other non-printing character as
your bullet
