3.5 floppy problems

Suddenly having problems using 3.5" floppiies with MS word. I'm using MS
word 2002(10.2627.2625) on my Gateway laptop running windows XP.
I first noticed the problem when trying to "save as" from the word document
on the floppy(was trying to save to a new usb finger drive). Instead of
bringing up the save as dialog block the document id in the system tray just
keeps flashing. Got the save as block to come up by double clicking on that
word doc.sys.tray id. But why?
It's also taking much longer to load word docs from floppies(keeps clicking
away) & now I notice at the bottom of the document as it tries to load
"requesting virus scan..." why? This even after disabling my Norton
antivirus automatic scanning. Now one other thing to note is that yesterday
I allowed my computer to download the MS service pack 2 + 2 other MS
critical updates............What did they do to my machine? Or do you think
I have a faulty floppy drive? Can someone please help.

Never open a file on a floppy or save it to the floppy. This is asking for a
corrupt file.

Use Windows Explorer and copy it from the floppy to the desired location. Or
copy and paste the file from the hard disk to the floppy.
