3 changes to 5

David@Stellae

In both MS Excel 2003 when the 3 character is entered alone in a cell it
changes to a 5 character when the cursor moves to another cell. This happens
in all excel files on the computer.

(Note that this also happens in MS Word 2003 when entering a "stand-alone" 3
in text)

In other situations (Notepad, Netscape mail) this does not occur.

We use McAfee VirusScan 10 which is completeley up to date. Full scans have
been carried out in normal and safe mode as it was assumed this problem is
some sort of macro virus. McAfee finds no problem.

We have tested different keyboards.

When a 3 is entered as part of a larger number there is no problem.

There are no apparent macros running.

Any suggestions as to what to try next?

Many thanks

David

Have a look at the auto correct options under tools>autocorrect to see if it
has been added there to change a 3 to a 5

In Excel, try Tools==>AutoCorrect Options to see (though I can't think why
this should be done!!) that 5 is not set to replace 3.

The outcome you describe will happen if this is the case i.e single 3
becomes 5 but 12345 remains as entered.

If this solves the problem, look for same in WORD.

Many thanks John (and Toppers), that was the problem. Need to remember to
cheque simple things before assuming it's something more complicated.

Of course the question of how the change 3 to 5 found it's way into the
autocorrect definitions is another matter!

Thanks again

Info only...........

Excel and Word both use the same *.ACL so deleting from either App. deletes
from both.
