30 minutes to synchronize folders; can I reduce this time?

I have Office 2007. I use Outlook to see my mail coming from Earthlink.net
(via Pop3). My synchronization churns and churns and keeps me from working
for at least 1/2 hour to 45 minutes when I first turn on my computer. Or if
I leave it on...after I've left for a while and "wake" it up to start working
again. I have to wait and wait. IE won't work while it is running. It also
synchronizes during the day. Any suggestions?
