301 redirect

I have changed a file name and now need to know how to do 301 redirect? O/S
on remote site is Apache/2.2.3 (Unix) I do not know what an .htaccess file
is, have read that is where I do the redirect. Could you please explain in
detail how to do this . I am so confused.
