I worked on a novel with a partner 1997-2001 and have used and earlier version of word. My partner was using a PC.
We started to revise in the spring of 2007 on 04. she still on a PC and me on a MAC. In Jan 08 spell ceck and grammar check no longer worked. Everything else was fine in our edit/revision process.

We now have 08. Sp/grammar check don't work--Is there a way to import/export/introduce the text to 08 so that it isn't corrupted?

If your document is corrupted, the following trick should help: make sure to
turn on invisibles by clicking the inverted P (¶) in Word's Standard
toolbar. Now select the entire text EXCEPT FOR the final paragraph sign (¶),
which stores all the information on your document and also any potential
corruptions. Copy your selection and paste it into a new document. If the
spell check now works, the document was indeed corrupted; if it doesn't,
post back, as something else must be going on.

I doubt if the document is corrupted: you would have different symptoms.

But your Spelling dictionary may be

When you say "Don't work", we need a bit more detail than that to help you.

What happens when you try? What exact indication are you getting? And --
critically -- what language is marked on the text at the point where the
spelling is not working? Hint: Don't rely on memory: actually click
around in the text and look: funny things can happen to language marking.

If the text has been set to a language of "No proofing" that's exactly what
will happen
