3D Text Box Color and Text Alignment

D

DG

I am creating a text box with 3D effects. I don't like the color of gray
for the face of the box where the text goes and using "lighting" doesn't get
it light enough for me. Plus, I'd like to be able to choose a different
color on the face of the box. Is this possible? I worked around it slightly
by making the text box, right clicking to get the "Borders and Shading"
option and getting the color I want, changed the inside margins to "0", then
I added the 3D effect. I change the margins to "0" so the colored face area
doesn't look like a box within my 3D text box. The problem with this is then
text alignment. I'd like the text to be centered both horizontally and
vertically in the box and the box is oversized. Is there an easier way for
me to do this??? I'm using Word 2002. Thanks in advance for any help
provided.

No offense, but you are demanding too much from the drawing toys - er, tools
- provided in Word. You might have a look at:

For some ideas but I don't believe you'll find an effective solution.

In order to effectively do something that involved you'll need to use a
capable graphics application to create the artwork, then insert the graphic
into your doc. Or you may be able to take advantage of the capabilities in
PowerPoint, which are a little moe powerful. Then copy & paste into the doc.

No offense taken...and please don't feel I'm not appreciative of your
response...but I didn't think it was that demanding a question - I only want
to 'easily' change the color of the portion of the 3D text box where you
actually type the text (it's hard to believe we're stuck with only gray,
dark gray and darker gray which is not good for items that may have to be
photocopied). As I mentioned, I worked around it a bit but it's time
consuming with all of the steps involved. When I get to work on Monday I am
going to take a look at PowerPoint as you suggested. Thanks!

Hi D.G.,

Without knowing the steps you're using it's just a guess on what may be happening. These are with using
'3D-Style-1' on a text box with text already in it.

1. To change the face color of the textbox, after applying a 3d effect to the text box and with the text box selected choose the
'fill' icon on the Drawing toolbar and set it to 'no fill' (or to the color of choice.

2. To change the edges of the 3d effect use the '3d settings' toolbar from the 3d icon on the drawing toolbar to set a color. Note
that if you have the margins of the textbox set to zero then the text may not show when it's over the 3d inside border of the box if
you're using 'no fill' or a transparent setting.

3. To vertically center text in a textbox insert a one cell table in the textbox then drag the table cell to the size you want, type
your text in the table cell and use the table properties to change the vertical alignment of the table cell to center. You can
separately color the 'face' of the table and the table borders using the Borders and Shadings tool.

Hi D.G.,

I forgot to mention that even without a table inserted in a text box you can use the fill can on the Drawing toolbar in combination
with the Fill can on the Tables Toolbar (or from Format=>Borders and Shading) and adjust the margins of the text box to get some
interesting effects with 3 color settings, or a background picture, or gradient border or background and then if you add a table you
can use some of the autoformat settings for the table to get other combinations within combinations.

If you fill with a picture, for example and then use the rotation tools on the 3d shape the text box shaded area and/or the table in
the text box will be forward faced but you can create some nice 'advertising' effects.

I don't know whether it is too late but I would forget the text to start with
and create and play around with coloring a rectangle to get what you want. eg
Fill Color/Fill Effects/Gradient/2 color ; Colour one white, colour 2 black.

Once you have the shape and coloring (it doesn't have to be a rectangle)
then create a text box with No Fill and No line. Manipulate its size to
constrain the text to the shape you want and simply position it over the
colored 3D shape and group the 2 together
