4 digit display in excel?

I want to make all the numbers I type appear as four
digits ex: 0001, 0002. I know I can use the "test"
formatting option, but I wanted to treat the cell contents
as numbers for formulas used elsewhere. I can't figure
out how to do with using the "custom" formatting option.
Does anyone know how to do this?

But Custom Format as 0000 seems to do what is needed. Any number of digits
in an input are expanded to at least 4 figures.
